At the same time, fineline in Paris has its peculiarities: many local artists have a busy schedule with waiting lists of two to six months. If you want a specific artist — you need to book in advance. This applies to me as well.
What to Look for When Choosing an Artist
Portfolio is the first and foremost thing. But you should look not at beautiful fresh photos immediately after healing, but at healed works. Fineline changes over time, and a good artist understands this: they initially set the size and thickness of the line so that the tattoo lasts rather than blurs after a year.
I usually advise paying attention to three things: line stability (no shaking, no unevenness), work with negative space, and whether the artist adapts the design to the body — or just transfers the picture one-to-one.
Prices and Realistic Expectations
In Paris, tattoos start at around €150 for a small piece. For artists with a reputation and a waiting list — from €200–250 and above. This is a normal range for a city with a high cost of living and a strong tattoo scene.
What not to do: look for the cheapest option for fineline tattoos. Thin lines do not forgive inaccuracies — and redoing poorly executed work is more challenging than it seems. It’s better to wait and book with someone whose work you genuinely appreciate.
Is a Tattoo Worth It While Traveling?
This question doesn’t depend on the city, but I often hear it from tourists who want to get a tattoo during their trip. If you’re planning a tattoo while traveling — choose a spot that heals well and doesn’t require complicated care in the first few days. Forearm, shoulder blade, and calf are good options. Feet, fingers, and décolletage areas are trickier, especially if you walk a lot or sunbathe right after the session.
Fineline tattoos in sun-exposed areas require protection from the first weeks. The sun in Paris is already active in May — SPF is a must if the tattoo will be exposed.
